Ministries

Board of Trustees

The members of the Board of Trustees have the awesome responsibility for maintaining all the physical assets of the church; i.e. the real and personal property of the church. They evaluate and assess the physical needs of the properties and make the necessary recommendation for action where needed. Each member is elected for a three year term.

Children

Our children are nurtured and cared for based on this scripture: Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” (Matt.19:14). As a result we encourage their participation in all age appropriate activities of the faith community. Some of the children’s groups are: Weekly Church School, Girls Scouts (Saturdays), and Liturgical Dance.

Eucharist

The members of this committee ensure that the elements for the Sacrament of Holy Communion are arranged each time we observe the sacrament and that the liturgical colors on and around the altar are reflective of the seasons of the liturgical calendar.

Finance

The committee consists of a Chairperson; a Treasurer and two Assistant Treasurers; a Financial Secretary and an Assistant Financial Secretary. The treasurer provides periodic financial status reports to the church. They actively participate in fundraising activities and closely monitor the financial health of the church.

Health

This group has been partnering with the New York City National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS and other faith based organizations in the fight against the HIV/AIDS and other diseases. They host health screenings and workshops that offer education, testing, and referrals when necessary.

Hunger & Mission

This committee responds to local & global food insecurities and adversity caused by disasters. Locally they distribute food to vulnerable persons at Thanksgiving. The men and women of Hunger & Mission collaborated with the church to send four barrels of clothing and other necessities to the Bahamas Hurricane Relief Fund.

Lay Leadership

The role of the Committee on Lay Leadership is to identify and select those members of the congregation who are deemed to be suitable to serve on committees appropriate to their spiritual gifts and ensuring inclusivity and diversity in their decision making. The persons who have agreed to serve on designated committees are then presented at the Charge Conference for confirmation of their election. Members of this committee are elected to serve for a three-year term. The committee is required to meet in closed session, and information shared in the committee is to be kept confidential.

Men’s Ministry

The men are an integral part of the life of the church; the men believe that with God, all things are possible. These men assist in any way they can to ensure that the church can meet its financial obligations. They have hosted several fundraising activities toward this end. They host an annual men’s day celebration where they plan and conduct a lively, spirit filled worship service.

Women’s Ministry

The United Methodist Women local unit at Union United Methodist Church is a fantastic group of Christian women. Their purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Their love of the Lord gives the motivation, strength, and courage to support several agencies such as Anchor House, Bergen House, Brooklyn Church Nursing Home, and Crown Heights Prospect Rehab Center.
